As you may know, the business of Mat Basics servicing your framing mat needs closed and retired June 30 2020 this summer. It was a wonderful 48 year run as a family business in the craft and hobby industry! The loyalty of our customers and friends is incredible; and the last thing I wanted to do was leave everybody hanging wondering where to go for their mats and clear bags.
But I have some exciting news for you today! After all the jostling of liquidating and moving settled down, I buckled down and finally vetted out an extremely reputable company to partner with.
I am pleased to introduce and recommend you to Diamond Die and Bevel Cutting (DDBC) out of the Chicago area. They are a sister company of Crescent, so you can still get the exact same mat colors that I ordered from Crescent too. And your backers and clear bags!
Diamond will fulfill, ship and bill your orders through them.
And, drum roll, the great news is I did not retire! With this partnership, I will work personally with you as a prior Mat Basics customer to take your orders, answer questions, quotes and do pretty much everything I did before with Mat Basics to help you transition smoothly.

Mat Basics business retired and closed in June 2020, after a successful run of 48 years!
We have dearly loved serving you! So many talented and wonderful professional artists, photographers and individual crafters in the craft industry, as well as national and regional chain stores, distributors, art galleries, and fine craft, hobby and art stores and general merchandise retailers.
It has been a great personal pleasure to travel from one coast to the other doing trade shows for decades, walking art shows and meeting many of you face to face in business or even on vacation trips! The loyalty of all of you to us is unsurpassed, and has brought on many years of good friendships, as well as doing business together. I can’t begin to thank you enough for that.
Our building lease was up, so between that and the many changes to our industry and the icing of the coronavirus shut down for three months, it was time to make this bittersweet decision.
Mat Basics Inc, formerly Prime Arts Ltd Inc has remained a family business all this time out of Cincinnati, Ohio. My mom, Diane Johnson, began Prime Arts Ltd in our house when I was a kid in 1972, and taught me to become quite the little professional ten year old working wholesale trade show booths with my parents!
Mom was well established in the needlework industry with the first products when my dad, Jerry Johnson, came on board in 1982 to transition into framing mats. We innovated and introduced many successful products into the marketplace, including our trademark Mats by PAL Gold and Silver label mat programs. Although my parents retired long ago, I feel very proud to have been a longstanding leader and manufacturer in the craft and framing mat industry!
It is with gratitude that I thank you for your business, on behalf of my parents and myself, and I thank all the Prime Arts / Mat Basics employees that were also so loyal and faithful for decades to consistently make you exceptional products.
